It’s that time of year again- the days are getting shorter, the countdown to the holidays has begun, and your furnace is fired up.

As temperatures continue to dip and your energy bills go up and up, you start wondering where all that cost is coming from. Do you need to replace your furnace? Are there ways to help your furnace work more efficiently?

Here are some tips and tricks to help your furnace work better and last longer:

Turn On The Ceiling Fan

It may sound counterintuitive, but the ceiling fan helps to circulate the warm air around the house. Since heat naturally rises, this pushes the collected hot air back down and is a cost-effective way of regulating indoor temperature. It will work especially well if you have vaulted ceilings.

Keep The Filters Clean

The furnace filter prevents debris such as dust and hair from clogging up the furnace as it pulls air through to heat it. We suggest cleaning or replacing the air filter around every three months (and monthly during the winter) to prevent extra stress on the furnace.

Get A Smart Thermostat

If you don’t already have a smart or programmable thermostat at home, then you should put it at the top of your list. They are one of the best ways to lower your bills and reduce wear and tear on your furnace. They don’t have to be expensive either, just a basic one that can be programmed to adjust the temperature at home during the day or while nobody’s home is all you need.

Use Curtains Strategically

Believe it or not, your curtains make a noticeable difference in the temperature of your home. Keeping your curtains closed at night prevents any heat loss to the cold outdoors, while opening them on a sunny day, especially on west-facing windows, allows sunlight to warm up your house naturally.

Cook At Home

Ever notice that you’re sweating when cooking in the summer? Try giving your furnace a break and use the stove or oven more often to help warm the house up.

Make Your House Draft-proof

Drafty windows and doors are a sure way to losing heat and putting more pressure on your furnace. Make sure to seal them where you can to keep the warm air in! You may also consider installing carpeting to help with draft insulation.

Prioritize Annual Maintenance

It is a wise investment to have a qualified professional inspect your furnace once a year. They can identify any problems or faulty parts that will further strain the system down the line. The cost of furnace maintenance is way cheaper than a furnace replacement in the middle of winter!
